Why Your Silk Press Doesn't Last
Share
Why your silk press doesn't last... good question.
Does your attempt to silk press your hair seem to fail? You have the tools, you turned up the heat, and still not getting the results you desire? Know that you are not alone.
Most people think the answer is more heat and more styling product. Wrong.
Truth is, the best silk press results are determined by the health of the hair. You may have heard the word "trained" before. That typically involved high exposure to heat to control the texture and cause the style to last longer, which is true but not healthy. We used this method in 8o's and 90's that eventually lead to compromise of the curl pattern and can eventually lead to damaged hair.
Although many think any compromise of curls is damage, that's not true. You can soften the texture for manageability and hair still remains healthy, but it needs to be done professionally with consistent treatments to keep hair healthy. But if your priority is your curls, simply stay away or limit your exposure to heat.
Technology evolves every industry and in the modern hair world we now use ceramic tools instead of the cast metal iron. This is not your grandmothers press and curl. Ceramic tools have ionic technology which helps recharge negative ions in the hair and create a smooth finish with a controlled measure of heat will conditioning the hair.
But most importantly its the proper conditioning and preparation of the hair that determines the results.
That’s where Silkify comes in. Once you condition and blow dry the hair, if it is not prepared properly no amount of spray, serums, or oils are going to compensate for what is lacking in hair health and proper preperation.
When I say everything starts at the shampoo bowl... I mean EVERYTHING.
Checkout the SilkOut Method for a successful silk press service.
- Cleansing the hair is key and clarifying with Intensity is a recommended first step to remove all natural and artificial oils for a clean canvas, follow with Balance Creme Wash to begin to rebalance the hair with this extreme hydrating shampoo.
- Silkify your hair with our restorative silkening treatment. It uses amino acids and collagen to nourish hair deep within the strand and add a protection to the cuticle for a healthy and silky finish.
- Follow with proper prep by choosing the right leave-ins to continue to hydrate and protecting the hair. Replenish helps detangle and moisturize the hair. The BlowOut Cream (optional for coarse hair) helps to control frizz, soften the hair, and protect from heat. Our SilkOut Serum offers maximum hydration which helps reduce frizz and reversion. A pump or two of our VitaSilk adds another layer of protection and can be used on damp or dry hair.
- Blow drying the hair with tension helps to smooth the cuticle and activate the silkening properties for a natural shine. The proper blow dry technique will help reduce the amount of direct heat from your styling tools. Proper preparation minimizes excessive heat.
- Once the hair is dried properly then the pressing can begin. A mist of our Shine Guard adds more protection and helps seal the cuticle and won't weigh the hair down. Straightening the hair and then finish the style with your choice of curls or beveling the ends for a sleek finish. For more volume add curls. Wrap at night to maintain hair and sleep in a satin or silk scarf.
Once the hair is dry any added moisture will revert the hair so reducing the exposure helps preserve the style. A healthy silk press service can last 2-4 weeks. When hair is conditioned properly and regularly the hair will be conditioned to last longer.
Silkify is a treatment recommended every 6-8 weeks. In between treatments we recommend the Balance conditioner for maintenance.
